St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church
Our Vision
The vision of this initiative is to renovate the sanctuary and community center to correct numerous issues and replace decades-old mechanical systems so that our facilities are current with building regulations and efficiency standards.
The renovations will allow us to grow our ministries and services. A renewed sanctuary and hall will facilitate accessibility so that we can welcome all people and facilitate greater outreach to parishioners and the Somerville community.
Building for the future
The Living Testimony Campaign will renew our church and fellowship hall to address these needs and prepare St. Nicholas for future generations. These improvements will create safer, more accessible, and more welcoming spaces that support worship, fellowship, education, outreach, and community engagement.
Through this campaign, St. Nicholas will be able to:

Where we're headed
Where we started
Our parish has grown to over 100 families. In 2009, we completed a major renovation including the Church Hall, kitchen, classrooms, offices, and conference room. We are active in the Lexington community through historical celebrations and parish-led events such as lectures, concerts, dinners, and Grecian Festivals.
Currently (2025–2026), we are developing plans for further improvements to enhance accessibility and traffic flow, expand the Narthex, and add a Byzantine dome.
Our ministries include Church School, GOYA (teens), Altar Servers, Parish Council, Stewardship, Chanters/Readers, Family Night, Ladies Philoptochos, Orthodox Life Series, Bible Study, and the Community Transformation Team. Visit our website for more details.
Our history: on Sunday March 15, 1959, at 4 o'clock, a group met at the office of Dr. Charles T. Mooney and discussed the feasibility of an organization consisting of the Greek families in this vicinity.
That momentous day, 57 years ago, marked the start of what was to become the St. Nicholas Parish. The immediate aims were simple: to unite us in thought, words, and actions for the achievement of a common purpose - "the fulfillment and perpetuation of our religious and national heritage."
By the dedication and self-sacrifice of all those involved and with the dauntless and unflagging leadership of Dr. Mooney, the early founders overcame tremendous obstacles. Dr. Mooney's optimism was contagious, and the founding membership expanded rapidly to include some 30 - 35 families. The opening Service of the yet-unnamed church, however, was celebrated on November 15, 1964 by Father James Christon following years of fund-raising, construction and preparation.
